bird stealing bread
The year was 2010, or 2011, I can't really tell. I was in one of a school trip on a mountain. I couldn't, whatever I did, bring myself to sleep. Perhaps varying thoughts also came and go and the cold floor and wind obviously did not help. I brought my iPod, started shuffling around, until I got to the debut album by Iron & Wine, The Creek Drank the Cradle. I listened to it in one sitting. And later it brought me to sleep.
The album has a special place in my heart, not only because of the extremely vivid memories, but also the story. I couldn't emphasise enough how every song is so poetic and how deeply I feel connected to each and every one of it.
Whether you're realizing an immature past,
Time and all you gaveI was the jerk who preferred the sea
To tussling in the waves
Tugging your skirt singing please, please, please
Amazed, but at the same time, thoroughly insecure and afraid of that thing called love,
And love is the scene I render
When you catch me wide awake
And love is a dream you enter
Though I shake and shake and shake you
And love's the best endeavour
Waiting in the lion's mane
Does his company make
Light of a rainy day?
How I've missed you lately
And the way we would speak
And all that we wouldn't say
Do his hands in your hair
Feel a lot like a thing you believe in
Or a bit like a bird stealing bread
Out from under your nose
When you catch me wide awake
And love is a dream you enter
Though I shake and shake and shake you
And love's the best endeavour
Waiting in the lion's mane
or missing a past lover,
Tell me, baby, tell meDoes his company make
Light of a rainy day?
How I've missed you lately
And the way we would speak
And all that we wouldn't say
Do his hands in your hair
Feel a lot like a thing you believe in
Or a bit like a bird stealing bread
Out from under your nose
Here I am a decade later and still captivated by the record.
How can you get over that bird stealing bread metaphor?
